Legend
tells us, that
more than five hundred years ago, the Holy Buddha invited
all the animals ever created to join him for the New Year.
Only 12 animals came to his celebration. As a form of reward he named each animal that showed up after
a year. From
that day forward anyone born in a 12 year cycle associated
with that animal would take on the special qualities of
that particular animal.
The order in which the animals arrived were: The
Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake,
the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog
and the Pig.
Other
traditions replace the Ox with the Buffalo, the Rabbit
or Hare with the Cat,
the Sheep with the Goat, the Rooster with the Cock
and the Pig with the Boar.
